Overview:
Pembina Pipeline Corporation’s Redwater office is actively hiring for a Staff Engineer, Process Safety, to join the team. This position reports to the Director, Process Safety in the Technical & Operations Services Unit, part of Pembina’s Operations Business Division.
Promoting Pembina’s Safety Culture – Zero by Choice, the Safety Service Unit is dedicated to delivering quality products and services by leading the enterprise-wide occupational health and safety, process safety, physical security, and emergency management programs, insurance program and Operations Management System governance. The Safety team ensures compliance with all company, federal and local government health, safety, security and emergency management regulations and requirements ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for our employees, contractors, and communities.
The Staff Engineer, Process Safey is responsible for identifying process hazards, evaluating the risk of those hazards, and assisting in the development of effective solutions to mitigate risk within NGL Fractionation Division.
The successful candidate must live within 100 km of Redwater, AB.
Responsibilities may include but not limited to:

- Lead/Coordinate Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) on existing assets;
- Participate in or lead various safety reviews/studies, such as PHAs, ORAs, HAZOPs, JSAs, incident investigations and audits;
- Provide oversight and be considered a super user for the Management of Change (MOC) process;
- Provide oversight to the Business Units for the PHA schedule;
- Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for process safety incidents and near misses;
- Provide oversight and conduct audits for MOC and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR);
- Provide process safety mentoring and training to your BU and corporately as required;
- Act as the Process Safety Subject Matter Expert within the NGL Division;
- Facilitate meetings for development and maturity of Operational Risk Registers;
- Oversight and Status of Overdue and Coming Due Action Items and Risks for assigned business unit;
- Classify all Process Safety Events from Tier 1-4 and review all incidents and near misses to determine if they are Process Safety Events;
- Provide technical assistance and advice covering but not limited to safety management systems, process safety, fire prevention, quantitative risk analysis and behavioral safety to ensure minimization of losses and prevention of fires;
- Functional safety engineering and compliance with IEC 61511 as applicable;
- Provide support management in performance monitoring by selecting relevant KPIs and data analysis;
- Integration of new assets – be part of the team if your business unit is acquiring new assets;
- Participate in teams responsible for implementing new processes;
- Lead organizational change to build and develop process safety culture and processes;
- Demonstrate learning agility by actively seeking feedback, adapting to new information quickly, and applying learnings to improve performance and deliver results in a dynamic environment; and
- Participate and support an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial or other related discipline and eligible for registration as a P.Eng. with APEGA;
- Minimum of 10-15 years of experience in PSM, with proven track record in supporting Operations and Process/Process Safety engineering;
- Must have 10+ years of industry experience with proven expertise in plant operations and process/process safety engineering;
- Must be familiar with OSHA 1910.119 , CCPS Risk Based Process Safety and CSA Z767;
- Experience developing and implementing a corporate/enterprise level PSM program for use in a multiple asset and multiple jurisdiction context;
- Operations experience in gas processing, petrochemical facilities or pipelines considered an asset;
- Experience building and maturing a Process Safety program in the midstream oil and gas sector would be considered an asset;
- Experience in HAZOP and LOPA along with working knowledge of safety instrumented systems and Quantitative Risk Assessments;
- Experience with IEC 61511 standards and their applications would be considered an asset;
- Knowledge of or familiarity with ABSA, ASME, CSA, NFPA, and API codes and standards is considered an asset;
- A strong technical understanding of process safety, natural gas liquids fractionation, process optimization, data analysis and operational best practices;
- Must be flexible and apply solid judgment with a proven ability in leading teams through continuous change and improvement in a fast-paced environment;
- Strong communication and technical writing abilities, attention to detail and well-developed interpersonal skills are required;
- SAP experience would be an asset;
- CCPS Certified Process Safety Professional would be considered an asset;
- Certified Functional Safety Professional (or Expert) from Exida or equivalent will be considered an asset;
- Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new tools, technologies, or processes and apply them effectively in a fast-paced environment; and
- Ability to rapidly acquire and apply new technical skills, tools, and frameworks in response to evolving project requirements and emerging technologies.
This is a site-based role out of Redwater, but travel to various sites will be required in Canada (BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario) and the United States (Illinois, North Dakota). Travel requirements anticipated to be 10-15% of time.
The successful candidate must be legally able to work in the country of the position. The final candidate will be required to undergo Pre-Employment Background Checks including a Criminal Record Check.
