Overview:

Pembina Pipeline Corporation’s Redwater office is recruiting for Tradesperson – Instrumentation and Controls Journeyman to join the team. This position reports to the Foreman, Instrumentation & Controls in the Natural Gas Liquids Business Unit, part of Pembina’s Facilities Division.

NBU is involved in the Fractionation, Terminals & Storage, and Logistics and Distribution of specification natural gas liquids throughout north America. Natural Gas Liquids are components of natural gas classified by weight and number of carbon atoms – Methane (C1), Ethane (C2), Propane (C3) Butane (C4) and Condensate (mixture of C5+). Fractionation involves separating the different products in an NGL mix out into Ethane, Propane and Butane.

Responsibilities may include but not limited to:

  • Participate and support an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace;
  • Install, commission, repair, and maintain various instrumentation equipment associated with industrial processing facilities, including testing and troubleshooting transmitters such as:
    • Multivariable, level (magneto strictive, guided wave, thermal dispersion), flow (differential pressure, Coriolis, vortex), pressure, and temperature devices
  • Utilize device communicators such as HART, DTM, and Siemens PDM to support instrumentation diagnostics and configuration;
  • Demonstrate experience in testing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing various types of flow control valves, including pneumatic and electronic systems;
  • Ensure safe testing and maintenance of devices in live facilities by managing shutdowns, bypassing control loops, and communicating potential impacts with operations teams;
  • Understand and translate DCS/PLC programmed logic into field actions to support advanced troubleshooting of complex compressor and fired heater issues (previous programming experience is required);
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot industrial control network architectures, including fiber optic systems, serial radios, and Ethernet communication networks;
  • Demonstrate familiarity with managed switches, VLAN configuration, and network segmentation to ensure reliable and secure communication across control systems;
  • Ensure availability during assigned on-call periods and respond to calls in a timely manner; and 
  • Ability to meet peak work demands outside of regular scheduled shifts.

Qualifications:

Certification/Experience:

  • Journeyperson Instrumentation and Controls Technician, Instrument Technologist, or equivalent related experience;
  • Related, relevant Journeyperson-level experience as an Instrument and Control Technician in an industrial setting, with in-depth knowledge of process control and instrumentation;

Technical Expertise:

  • Strong understanding of PLC systems (e.g., Allen Bradley), DCS systems (e.g., Siemens PCS7), or other automation systems, including hardware, software, and system integration, to enable effective troubleshooting and repair;
  • Proficiency in OT network skills; CCNA certification or similar qualifications are considered an asset;
  • The ability to read and interpret manuals, policies, engineering standards, regulations, drawings, and schematics (including electrical, pneumatic, and P&IDs) to troubleshoot and resolve production issues; 

Software Proficiency:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; 
  • Previous experience with SAP or other PMM (Plant Maintenance Management) systems is highly desirable; 

Soft Skills:

  • Self-motivated individual requiring minimal supervision is desired; 
  • Effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; 
  • Positive mindset and team-oriented demeanor with a focus on collaboration; 
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and leadership abilities; and 

Other Requirements:

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License. 
     

This position is considered “Safety Sensitive” and so will require Pre-Employment Drug & Alcohol Testing which includes testing for marijuana metabolites.  You may also be required to provide a Driver’s Abstract. 

 

The successful candidate must be legally able to work in the country of the position. Final candidate will be required to undergo Pre-Employment Background Checks including a Criminal Record Check.
