Overview:

Where there is growth there is opportunity. Pembina Pipeline’s Redwater location is actively hiring a Controls Engineer to join the team. Reporting the Supervisor of Facility Automation, the Controls Engineer will play a critical role in supporting the process engineering, project, and maintenance teams ensuring safe and reliable operations.

 

The Redwater complex part of Pembina Operations’ has several fractionators for processing paraffinic and olefinic natural gas liquids. This growing site also includes significant cavern storage assets and cogeneration units.

 

Pembina’s Operations team drives consistent operational excellence across our operating footprint to ensure safe, reliable and cost-efficient outcomes, operating an integrated network of hydrocarbon liquids and natural gas pipelines, gas gathering and processing facilities, oil and natural gas liquids infrastructure and logistics services, and an export terminals business. 

Responsibilities may include but not limited to:

  • Champion Pembina’s “Zero by Choice” safety culture and Life Saving Rules, integrating safety into all work activities and decisions;
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, maintenance, and project teams to support the design, improvement, and implementation of control strategies and architectures across facility control systems (DCS/SIS) and future expansion;
  • Contribute to the development, maintenance, and optimization of basic, intermediate, and advanced process control strategies;
  • Partner with consultants and contractors through design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup activities;
  • Review and provide input on engineering deliverables to support safe, reliable, and efficient operations;
  • Support plant testing, commissioning, startup, and ongoing operational changes impacting control systems;
  • Participate in Management of Change (MOC), incident investigations, HAZOPs, LOPAs, risk assessments, and design reviews, providing controls expertise as needed;
  • Maintain and improve control system documentation, including control philosophies, narratives, loop drawings, P&IDs, and system turnover documentation;
  • Support alarm rationalization efforts and reduction of nuisance alarms to enhance operator effectiveness;
  • Provide day‑to‑day technical support and collaborate on complex troubleshooting of control systems and networks;
  • Share expertise and support maintenance, operations, engineering, and major project teams as a controls subject‑matter resource;
  • Demonstrate adaptability and continuous learning, applying feedback and new information to improve outcomes; and
  • Support a respectful, equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace through collaborative and professional conduct.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline, with experience in process control systems;
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or equivalent professional experience, typically gained through several years of work in an operating facility;
  • Relevant engineering experience in large industrial environments; experience in refinery, gas plant, or petrochemical facilities is considered an asset;
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with interest and experience in mentoring or supporting plant personnel on process control programming and development activities;
  • Working knowledge of control systems (e.g., Siemens), loop tuning software, APC servers, historian systems, and OPC (Aspen, PI, or similar); equivalent systems experience is valued;
  • Understanding of control system infrastructure, including controllers, servers, operator clients, and field devices;
  • Ability to work independently with appropriate guidance, manage changing priorities, and contribute effectively in a dynamic environment;
  • Clear and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new tools, technologies, and processes and apply them in fast‑paced, operational settings; and
  • Collaborative approach to building strong relationships and fostering confidence through technical expertise and professionalism.

 

 

This position is considered “Safety Sensitive” and so will require Pre-Employment Drug & Alcohol Testing which includes testing for marijuana metabolites.

You may also be required to provide a Driver’s Abstract.
You will need to be located 100KM of the Redwater AB location.
