Overview:
Where there is growth there is opportunity. Pembina Pipeline’s Channahon facility is actively hiring a Senior Process Controls Technologist to join the team. Reporting to the Supervisor of Facility Automation, the Senior Technologist, Process Controls is a senior technical contributor responsible for the safe, reliable, and optimized performance of facility control systems. This role provides hands‑on expertise across DCS/SIS, process control strategy development and tuning, alarm management, troubleshooting, and support through project execution, commissioning, and operational change. The incumbent is a trusted technical partner to operations, maintenance, engineering, and projects—bringing strong technical judgment, disciplined safety thinking, and a collaborative approach.
The Channahon asset part of Pembina Pipeline’s operations, located near Morris/Channahon, Illinois, is a critical U.S. midstream facility within Pembina’s integrated value chain. The site is home to Pembina’s Aux Sable NGL Extraction and Fractionation Facility (ASLP), one of the largest natural gas liquids (NGL) processing complexes in North America.
The facility is located in Channahon, Illinois, about 50 miles southwest of Chicago near the eastern terminus of the Alliance pipeline. Since commencing operations in December 2000, ASLP has processed over 7.3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and has produced over 13 billion gallons of specification NGL products. The facility is capable of processing 2,100 million cubic feet per day of natural gas and can produce approximately 131,500 barrels per day of specification NGL products. All of the gas delivered via the Alliance Pipeline is processed at the Pembina ASLP Channahon NGL Facility.
Pembina’s Operations team drives consistent operational excellence across our operating footprint to ensure safe, reliable and cost-efficient outcomes, operating an integrated network of hydrocarbon liquids and natural gas pipelines, gas gathering and processing facilities, oil and natural gas liquids infrastructure and logistics services, and an export terminals business.
Responsibilities may include but not limited to:
- Embed safety into automation and control system decisions, championing Pembina’s Zero by Choice safety culture and Life Saving Rules through disciplined control design, MOC participation, alarm management, and operational support;
- Apply deep technical expertise in DCS and SIS platforms to design, configure, optimize, and troubleshoot control strategies supporting safe, stable, and efficient operations;
- Develop, tune, and maintain basic, intermediate, and advanced process control strategies, improving operability, reliability, and performance;
- Collaborate with operations, maintenance, engineering, IT/OT, and project teams to implement practical, fit‑for‑purpose control solutions across facilities and expansions;
- Support project execution, commissioning, startup, and cutovers, providing controls leadership during FAT/SAT, testing, and live operational transitions;
- Review and contribute to engineering deliverables, including control philosophies, narratives, logic, P&IDs, cause‑and‑effect, and turnover documentation, ensuring alignment with operating requirements and standards;
- Participate in HAZOPs, LOPAs, risk assessments, incident investigations, and design reviews, contributing controls expertise and sound technical judgment;
- Maintain and improve control system documentation, ensuring technical clarity, traceability, and readiness for operational use and future change;
- Support and lead alarm rationalization initiatives, reducing nuisance alarms and improving operator effectiveness and situational awareness;
- Provide day‑to‑day technical support and advanced troubleshooting of control systems, networks, interfaces, and field instrumentation in a live operating environment;
- Serve as a controls subject‑matter expert, sharing knowledge and supporting operations and maintenance personnel through coaching, guidance, and problem solving;
- Demonstrate independent technical judgment, strong problem‑solving capability, and effective prioritization amid changing operational demands;
- Maintain technical currency by learning and applying new control tools, technologies, and best practices, incorporating lessons learned to continuously improve outcomes; and
- Contribute to a respectful, collaborative, and inclusive workplace through professionalism, credibility, and constructive cross‑functional engagement.
Qualifications:
- Formal technical training or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline with a strong focus on process control systems;
- Proven experience in large industrial environments; exposure to refinery, gas plant, or petrochemical operations is a strong asset;
- Strong planning, prioritization, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and shifting operational priorities;
- Working knowledge of industrial control systems (e.g., Honeywell), loop tuning, APC platforms, historian systems, and OPC connectivity (Aspen, Uniformance, PI, or similar); experience with equivalent platforms is valued;
- Solid understanding of control system infrastructure, including controllers, servers, operator workstations, networks, and field instrumentation;
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with appropriate guidance, applying sound judgment in a fast‑paced, operational environment;
- Clear and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for varied audiences;
- Strong capability to learn and apply new tools, technologies, and processes, maintaining technical currency in automation and controls; and
- Collaborative, service‑oriented mindset that builds confidence and trust through technical depth, reliability, and professionalism.
This position is considered “Safety Sensitive” and so will require Pre-Employment Drug & Alcohol Testing which includes testing for marijuana metabolites.
Must live within 60 miles of the facility located in Channahon, Illinois.
