Overview:


Pembina Pipeline Corporation’s Fort Saskatchewan office is recruiting for an Instrumentation and Controls Tradesperson to join the team. This position reports to the Operations Foreman in the Natural Gas Liquids Business Unit, part of Pembina’s Facilities Division.

The Heartland Offgas Plant (HOP) is a conventional cryogenic extraction plant, that was commissioned in 2011 located in the industrial area of the City of Fort Saskatchewan. It includes propane refrigeration and mole sieve dehydration, and processes Offgas from the Shell Scotford Refinery producing NGL, ethane, hydrogen, and residue products.

The Tradesperson role is critical to the safe and efficient operation of HOP ensuring the reliability and functionality of advanced instrumentation and control systems.  It supports the plant’s ability to process offgas into valuable products such as NGL, ethane, hydrogen, and residue. And by leveraging technical expertise in troubleshooting, maintenance, and system integration, this role directly contributes to the plant’s operational excellence and adherence to Pembina’s safety and performance standards.

 

Responsibilities may include but not limited to:

  • Participate and support an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace;
  • Demonstrate leadership by mentoring and guiding team members, fostering collaboration, and ensuring alignment with operational goals;
  • Understand and translate DCS/PLC programmed logic into field actions to support advanced troubleshooting of complex compressor and fired heater issues;
  • Ensure safe testing and maintenance of devices in live facilities by managing shutdowns, bypassing control loops, and communicating potential impacts with operations teams;
  • Install, commission, repair, and maintain various instrumentation equipment associated with industrial processing facilities, including testing and troubleshooting transmitters such as multivariable, level, flow, pressure, and temperature devices;
  • Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot online process gas chromatographs and H2S analyzers;
  • Utilize device communicators such as HART, DTM, and Foundation Fieldbus to support instrumentation diagnostics and configuration;
  • Demonstrate experience in testing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing various types of flow control valves, including pneumatic and electronic systems;
  • Exhibit familiarity with industrial control network architectures, including fiber optic systems, serial radios, and Ethernet communication networks, as well as managed switches, VLAN configuration, and network segmentation;
  • Proactively identify opportunities for process improvements and lead initiatives to enhance plant reliability and efficiency; and
  • Ensure availability during assigned on-call periods and respond to calls in a timely manner. Peak work demands may require work outside of regular scheduled shifts.

Qualifications:

 

  • Certification/Experience:
    • Journeyperson Instrumentation and Controls Technician certification; and
    • Related, relevant Journeyperson-level experience as an Instrument and Control Technician in an industrial setting, with in-depth knowledge of process control and instrumentation.

  • Technical Expertise:
    • Strong understanding of PLC systems (e.g., Allen Bradley), DCS systems (e.g., DeltaV), or other automation systems, including hardware, software, and system integration, to enable effective troubleshooting and repair;
    • Ability to read and interpret manuals, policies, engineering standards, regulations, drawings, and schematics (including electrical, pneumatic, and P&IDs) to troubleshoot and resolve production issues; and
    • Continuously adapt to emerging technologies and evolving technical requirements by actively acquiring new skills, applying innovative solutions, and integrating feedback into daily problem-solving.

  • Software Proficiency:
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; and
    • Previous experience with SAP or other PMM (Plant Maintenance Management) systems is highly desirable.

  • Soft Skills:
    • Demonstrated capacity to effectively guide and motivate teams in the absence of direct supervisory responsibilities, exemplifying advanced interpersonal and collaborative abilities;
    • Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently while motivating others toward common goals;
    • Strong organizational, time-management, and leadership abilities, with a focus on driving results and maintaining operational excellence; and
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts and provide clear direction to team members and stakeholders.

  • Other Requirements:
    • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

 

Candidate must live within 100KM of the Fort Saskatchewan Facility.

This position is considered “Safety Sensitive” and will require Pre-Employment Drug & Alcohol Testing which includes testing for marijuana metabolites.  You may also be required to provide a Driver’s Abstract.

 

The successful candidate must be legally able to work in the country of the position. Final candidate will be required to undergo Pre-Employment Background Checks including a Criminal Record Check.
