Overview:
Would you like to play a pivotal & instrumental role in the integration of Pembina Pipeline’s midstream asset base, across ~ 18,000+ km of pipe, facilities & infrastructure in an evolving energy market?
Pembina’s Calgary Office is actively hiring 2 Senior System Development Engineers. These positions report to the Supervisor, System Development; a core part of Pembina’s Project Enablement team within the Engineering & Construction Group.
The Senior Engineer, System Development role requires the convergence of commercial acumen, hydrocarbon processing & hydraulic expertise, and an understanding of market fundamentals to culminate in a realization of Pembina strategy. The position leverages a unique blend of highly technical expertise with a practical and innovative mindset. This remains a highly dynamic & involved role, balancing customer requests & timelines with realistic functional scoping; our aim is to grow the business while arming the Execution teams with integrated, clear work packages for safe & reliable Project delivery.
The System Development team is the engineering destination for all commodity movements across Pembina’s pipeline networks, developing functional scopes for commercial negotiations & opportunity vetting across the business. This role requires a keen interest in hydrocarbon transport & processing, with a creative & solutions focused mindset to support Pembina’s 3 C Strategy – Capture, Connect & Catalyze. The team integrates commercial opportunities within existing & new assets - identifying infrastructure to enhance Pembina’s service offering along the molecular value chain. System Development is a highly collaborative team with our many partners – serving Commercial Services and Business Development through coordination of Operations, Hydraulics, Logistics, and Project Execution Teams in pursuit of Pembina’s vision.
Responsibilities may include but not limited to:
- Champion Pembina’s Zero by Choice safety culture and Life Saving Rules by embedding physical, psychological, and cyber safety into all HR practices. - Working with multi-disciplinary teams; engagement of internal and external stakeholders to develop efficient fit for purpose & cost-effective proposals, projects and solutions for customers;
- Maximization of value and market performance by evaluating alternative services for existing assets;
- Collaborating with Operations, Logistics, Scheduling and Hydraulic teams to maximize existing assets and throughputs;
- Rapidly defining, quantifying and evaluating pipeline system opportunities/risks, to enable rationalization and prioritization against business performance criteria;
- Creation & analysis of hydraulic models for preliminary scoping & option vetting of commercial opportunities;
- Identifying new opportunities, generating preliminary work packages for schedule & cost estimation;
- Supporting the generation of pipeline service agreements & contracts;
- Acting as a safety role model within commercial & technical discussions, ensuring safety remains foundational to scope, schedule & business decisions;
- Establishment & communication of system & pipeline capacities, alignment across working groups to define & establish pipeline metrics;
- Providing ongoing Business Development and Commercial support for preliminary project vetting, leveraging expertise for initial option analysis;
- Occasional travel to field locations for project scoping & integration;
- Developing & building functional documents & system reports to summarize technical data & modeling; distillation of complex ideas and challenges into consumable, business relevant deliverables;
- Actively supporting & generating deliverables in support of complex & multi-disciplinary projects to support business growth;
- Presenting summarized ideas & reviewing technical information across a wide array of audiences;
- Amalgamation & modeling of contractual obligations, operational requirements, volumetric throughput, capacity & system changes;
- Ability to think broadly, across opportunities and challenges to arrive at new alternatives and that create value in alignment with Pembina’s values;

Qualifications:
- Candidates will have a degree in Engineering and be registered and in good standing with APEGA;
- 10+ years of engineering experience, including a strong track record in project definition and hydraulic modeling, combined with over 10 years supporting pipeline and facility operations;
- Experience with hydraulic modeling/software experience would be considered an asset (Synergi Pipeline Simulator (SPS), Synergi Gas, PipeSim, SynergiGas);
- Robust technical understanding of liquid & gas pipeline hydraulics, pumps/compressors, and operation of gas & liquid pipelines;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to convey & present complex technical solutions, influence and collaborate at all levels;
- Ability to present & distill down complex, far reaching opportunities for technical & non technical audiences;
- Strong commercial acumen spanning from product volumes, contractual concepts (fees, tolls, nominations etc.) to capital costs, operating expenses and the resulting value generation for Pembina;
- Ability to thrive in ambiguous situations - flexible, adaptable, and a quick learner that demonstrates courage and perseverance;
- Highly organized & adaptable to shift course as business drivers shift;
- High business acumen with an ability to identify prospective opportunities and challenges, summarize & articulate value through metrics and analytics (in both data rich and data poor scenarios);
- Exceptional presentation skills for creation & delivery of material across varied audiences, tailoring technical information into concise & digestible content;
