Overview

Pembina’s Asset Lifecycle Management Department in the Technical Services Unit (TSU) is seeking a Staff Engineer/Senior Specialist, Rotating Equipment (Gas Turbines) to join the team. This position reports to the Manager, Asset Lifecycle Management. The Staff Engineer/Senior Specialist, Rotating Equipment (Gas Turbines), a subject matter expert in their field, will provide technical leadership and lead the introduction of a fleet management philosophy for Pembina’s gas turbines and their auxiliary systems.
 

The Staff Engineer/Senior Specialist, Rotating Equipment (Gas Turbines) has expert-level technical turbomachinery knowledge balanced with in-depth commercial insight into gas turbine power plants, and a collaborative spirit to be a corporate leader and champion for the operation and maintenance of Pembina’s fleet of Solar and GE gas turbines.  This position works cross functionally and builds strong relationships with operations, maintenance, project, commercial, power optimization, and supply chain management teams.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include and are not limited to:

  • Develop and implement a multi-year roadmap for Pembina’s gas turbine/generator fleet management program, covering the full lifecycle of a gas turbine power plant – new power plant construction, commissioning, operation, maintenance, repairs, spare parts, life extension, long term storage and preservation, etc.;
  • Apply technical knowledge in the general field of turbomachinery including but not limited to vibration analysis, heat rate efficiency calculations, rotor balancing, condition-based monitoring, high temperature materials (including superalloys), compressor and thermal barrier coatings, tribology, etc.;
  • Apply technical knowledge with gas turbine and generator auxiliary systems including but not limited to lubrication, cooling, fuel, inlet air, exhaust, fire protection, electrical, and control systems;
  • Apply technical knowledge with heat recovery systems, fired boilers, and steam generation;
  • Assess component life and make determinations regarding retirement and life extension (including risk assessment);
  • Create and own technical standards to assure consistency in the design, construction, and modifications of gas turbine power plants;
  • Collaborate with operations and maintenance personnel to develop, implement, and manage to availability and reliability targets. Work with information systems to develop a reporting framework and analytics to assess and report on performance to the targets;
  • Identify, propose, and maintain a site-by-site multi-year project plan for potential modifications, upgrades, and improvements;
  • Monitor, assess, and implement Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) technical and service bulletins, taking urgent action when required to ensure the safe operation of the gas turbine fleet;
  • Develop spare parts lists and optimize inventory to achieve availability targets;
  • Lead and perform root cause analyses, recommend and champion improvements, and implement corrective actions (acute and systemic) to address premature component failure and operational issues;
  • Provide technical guidance and influence decision-making in the design of new gas turbine power plants and support construction and commissioning, as required;
  • Be a contributing leader and promote the shift from frequency-based maintenance to predictive and condition-based, in areas including but not limited to maintenance management data, analytics, and data-driven decision making;
  • Provide on-site support for plant overhauls and repairs (shop visits), as required;
  • Support construction and commissioning execution with planning (constructability and maintainability reviews), issue resolution, and start-up readiness review;
  • Collaborate with maintenance personnel to lead the development and maintain a system for managing gas turbine, generator, and auxiliary systems configurations and serialized components (both installed and spare);
  • Support operations and maintenance in outage planning;
  • Be engaged in gas turbine industry associations and user groups to monitor industry trends, emergent issues, technology developments, etc.;
  • Mentor, coach, and develop others with less experience;
  • Contribute to a team environment that values inclusion & diversity;
  • Actively support Pembina’s safety culture of "Zero by Choice" and the “Life Saving Rules”; and
  • Actively support Pembina’s process safety culture and journey.
     

Qualifications

  • Expert-level technical knowledge of gas turbines, generators, and auxiliary systems throughout their full lifecycle (construction, commissioning, operation, maintenance, life extension, etc.);
  • Expert-level technical knowledge in the maintenance of gas turbines and generators including but not limited to maintenance intervals, condition-based maintenance, equipment disassembly/re-assembly, repair techniques, materials, etc.;
  • Intimate familiarity with GE LM2500/6000 and Solar Mars/Taurus/Titan frames of gas turbines in industrial power generation applications;
  • Commercial and contract acumen for working with OEM long term service agreements, warranty claims, vendor pre-qualification and master service agreements, and repair/service contracts;
  • A team player with an ability to build collaborative working relationships with various stakeholders across organizational boundaries from executives and operational leaders to Operators and Maintenance Trades;
  • Able to calculate gas turbine plant performance, determine the causes of reduced efficiency, and recommend corrective action;
  • Root cause analysis (examples of methodologies include Apollo, Tap Root, FMEA, Ishikowo Fishbone, 5 Why’s, etc.);
  • Familiarity with RAM analyses and utilization of its outputs;
  • Ability to analyze data and draw conclusions to guide the Lifecycle Reliability Improvement Program and assist operational leaders in making more informed data-driven decision-making;
  • Minimum experience and disciplines:
    • Mechanical or Electrical/Controls are preferred, but other related disciplines may be considered;
    • Senior Engineer, Rotating Equipment– minimum 10 years of direct and relevant experience, licensed (or immediately eligible to be licensed) and in good standing with APEGA;
    • Specialist, Rotating Equipment– minimum 15 years of direct and relevant experience, licensed (or immediately eligible to be licensed) and in good standing with ASET;
  • Proficiency in SAP PMM would be considered an asset;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft suite of products;
  • Strong organizational skills with an ability to prioritize a high-volume of competing tasks in a fast-paced environment while managing stakeholder and sponsor expectations; and
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.


The successful candidate will be required to work out of Pembina’s office in Calgary, Alberta or Sherwood Park, Alberta.
