Overview:
Pembina Pipeline’s Marketing Business Unit is actively hiring a Rail Strategic Planning Senior Specialist to join the team. Reporting to the Director, NGL Marketing, the Sr. Specialist plays a visible and strategic role in leading rail-focused initiatives, including fleet management, industry partnerships, and projects with rail components. As a trusted subject matter expert, the Specialist supports the development of long-term strategies and plans that create value for Pembina’s stakeholders. This role also builds strong, collaborative relationships across the organization and with key rail service providers.
Pembina’s Marketing Business Unit (MBU) drives value through the strategic buying, selling, and optimization of natural gas, NGLs (ethane, propane, butane), condensate, and crude oil, leveraging market intelligence and arbitrage opportunities across the value chain. By contracting capacity on Pembina-owned and third-party pipelines and utilizing the Company’s rail fleet and logistics capabilities, the MBU enhances market access and pricing for both Pembina and Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) producers, while also identifying and advancing commercial opportunities that support the growth and optimization of Pembina’s broader asset portfolio.
Responsibilities may include but not limited to:
- Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) on rail logistics, leading railcar fleet strategy, capacity optimization, subleasing, storage, and railway partnerships;
- Lead commercial and operational rail service planning, including negotiation of freight, storage, and sublease agreements;
- Own fleet sizing, utilization optimization, and the annual rail transportation budget to ensure cost-effective and reliable service;
- Develop and execute long-term rail strategy (10-year horizon), aligning capacity across commodity value chains and growth initiatives;
- Provide expert input to rail egress projects and broader strategic growth opportunities across Pembina;
- Anticipate rail constraints and proactively recommend solutions to mitigate operational and commercial impacts;
- Collaborate cross-functionally (Marketing, Engineering, Operations, BD, Market Development, Customer Service) to unlock value and improve performance;
- Ensure compliance with SOX, customs, and regulatory requirements in partnership with the Marketing Business Unit;
- Represent Pembina in industry forums to strengthen market insight and relationships; and
- Support an inclusive, safe, and high-performing workplace aligned with Pembina’s values.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education (certificate, diploma, or degree) in business, supply chain, marketing, or a related field;
- 10+ years of progressive rail industry experience, bringing deep operational and commercial expertise to influence outcomes;
- 3+ years of oil and gas experience, with a strong ability to navigate commodity value chains and market dynamics;
- Proven ability to shape and execute strategic business plans, translating complex insights into clear, actionable decisions;
- Strong financial acumen, with the ability to influence budgeting, cost optimization, and performance outcomes;
- Recognized rail SME, leveraging expertise to guide decision-making, optimize operations, and drive enterprise value;
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to influence, align, and build credibility across all levels of the organization;
- Demonstrated leadership impact, leading through influence, fostering collaboration, and driving accountability;
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, effectively synthesizing data to inform and influence decisions;
- Sharp analytical and problem-solving capabilities, able to prioritize and influence outcomes in complex, fast-paced environments;
- Relationship-driven, with high integrity and a strong ability to influence and build trust with internal and external stakeholders; and
- Collaborative and adaptable, with a focus on continuous improvement and delivering customer-focused results.
