Overview:
Where there is growth, there is opportunity. Pembina’s Business Development & New Ventures team is actively hiring a Business Development Specialist. Reporting to the Manager, Business Development, this is a unique opportunity to join a high-impact, externally facing commercial team responsible for originating, evaluating, and developing new midstream and export opportunities across multiple commodities, including natural gas, crude oil, condensate, ethane, propane, butane, and selective step-out opportunities.
The Specialist, Business Development advances growth opportunities beyond Pembina’s core assets by developing new infrastructure and midstream solutions that unlock market access across all hydrocarbons. The role requires a strong commercial mindset, deep understanding of basin fundamentals and market dynamics, and the ability to independently progress opportunities from concept through structured evaluation.
Responsibilities may include but not limited to:
Origination & External Market Engagement
- Proactively originate commercial opportunities across multiple commodities and market segments;
- Engage directly with producers, midstream operators, marketers, traders, and downstream customers to identify and shape new opportunities;
- Develop insights on market-access pathways and value drivers across the West Coast, Midwest, and Gulf Coast, and translate these into actionable opportunities;
- Build and maintain a network of external relationships that drive new deal flow; and
- Identify opportunities tied to major egress systems (TMPL, Enbridge, Keystone, Alliance, NGTL) and understand how these influence basin economics and value realization.
Commercial Evaluation & Deal Development
- Lead or support the commercial evaluation of opportunities across greenfield, brownfield, expansions, partnerships, and export-oriented projects;
- Develop commercial terms, business cases, value propositions, and customer engagement materials;
- Integrate market, technical, and economic inputs to formulate clear recommendations;
- Conduct basin-level and market-level analysis to quantify value, customer needs, and competitive positioning; and
- Prepare commercial materials for internal leadership, customers, partners, and external stakeholders.
Project Advancement & Execution
- Serve as a commercial lead on multidisciplinary teams to advance opportunities through Pembina’s project development framework;
Coordinate with Engineering, Operations, Marketing & Trading, Regulatory, and Legal to ensure opportunities are technically and commercially viable; - Drive opportunities from initial concept through evaluation, customer engagement, deal structuring, and Gate-level progression; and
- Maintain awareness of market trends, regulatory developments, basin fundamentals, and competitive activity that influence project value or feasibility.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of progressive commercial or business development experience within the midstream, upstream, or broader energy infrastructure sector;
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, or a related discipline;
- Deep subject matter expertise in originating, evaluating, and advancing commercial opportunities across natural gas, crude oil, condensate, and NGL value chains;
- Strong working knowledge of Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) supply fundamentals and downstream market dynamics, including West Coast, Midwest, and Gulf Coast markets;
- Demonstrated understanding of major pipeline systems, egress constraints, and how infrastructure positioning influences commercial strategy and opportunity development;
- Proven ability to build, maintain, and leverage senior-level external customer and stakeholder relationships to identify, structure, and advance value-accretive opportunities;
- Ability to independently lead complex commercial workstreams, synthesize technical, financial, and market inputs, and coordinate effectively with engineering, operations, and other internal stakeholders to drive opportunities to execution;
- Strong executive-level communication skills, with confidence representing Pembina in external commercial discussions, negotiations, and industry forums;
- High degree of learning agility and intellectual curiosity, with the ability to quickly assimilate new market information, adapt to evolving commercial landscapes, and apply insights to decision-making;
- Demonstrated resourcefulness and problem-solving capability, navigating ambiguity and constraints to advance opportunities and deliver practical, value-driven outcomes;
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel, with strong capability leveraging Copilot and AI-enabled tools to enhance commercial analysis, scenario evaluation, and executive-level materials;
